Matera saw us young, drunk with love, twenty-five years ago. In the pictures of that day, our wet eyes and embarrassed smiles at the throwing of the rice outside the cathedral. Above all, our enthusiasm at discovering what the future holds for us. Twenty-five years passed as if a breath of wind took them away, full of emotions lived side by side that now we celebrated like they deserved.
Matera cathedral welcomed us again inside its ancient thick walls and benevolently sealed our union again. To the temple, standing since 1230, all our life together is nothing but a moment in the flow of centuries. We said yes again, surrounded by almost all the guests of that day, the stuccos and the precious decorations that were the setting for that time too. A yes that is way more conscious, full of pride for what we built together, but still trembling with emotion.
Together with our friends and relatives, we strolled through the streets of Civita, the steep cliff the cathedral is located on, and the photographer took us unforgettable pictures with the marvelous Sassi in the background. Matera that sees us smile again, closer than ever.
This time, we chose to dedicate time to us two, who have never enough of it. Always in a rush, always busy, always with a lot on our mind… Today everything stops, falls silent and leaves room for us. We decided to give ourselves a couple of days at the Antica Torre di Iuso, a few steps away from the cathedral. The incredible hotel struck us for its ability to conserve its thousand-year old fascination of mighty defensive fortress and, at the same time, to enclose such elegant interiors.
We entered our room, the Suite del Cavaliere, and we launched ourselves on the magnificent rounded bed, to look up at the brick vault. The vault exchanged our gaze, witness to the passage of history underneath itself and to our happiness now. Surrounded by a suffused light, almost unreal, I immersed in the hot tub, while my wife chose the emotional shower with chromotherapy to relax.
I am currently waiting for her on the suite’s balcony, ready for our romantic dinner. The waiter reveals me that Lucan specialties will be served to us and assures me that they will drive us crazy. She exits the bathroom, wearing make-up and dressed up like I rarely see her, and splendid, as if these passed years suited her like an elegant dress at a gala event. We enjoy the excellent dishes and the good wine slowly, tasting them, and we laugh, carefree and nearly nervous like at one of our first dates. Underneath us, Matera that is gradually illuminated with with little lights while the sun sets in the distance.
We relish the view of that surreal landscape, silent and immobile, that enraptures our eyes and our heart. Taking my partner’s hand, I whisper to her the promise the city suggested me, of making our bond as magical and eternal as Matera is.
