Today we recommend you a romantic holiday in the Liguria region, one of the most romantic destinations in Italy. The sunsets over the sea, the colorful “houses-tower” of the villages, the many legends, the alleys , the bays and coves, the romantic villas with gardens.
We suggest you a touristic itinerary to discover this wonderful region covering it all from East to West, showing you the most suitable places for a romantic holiday.
Let’s start with the Gulf of La Spezia, also known as the Gulf of Poets, because it was visited by many greatest poets as Shelley, Lord Byron, Petrarca, Mario Soldati and Eugenio Montale, who lived not far away in the Cinque Terre area . Let’s stop at Porto Venere, a place that takes its name from the goddess of love. The city is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and it is famous for the striking colorful houses, the cobbled paths and St. Peter’s Church overlooking the sea, from where you can admire a breathtaking sunset.
We continue with the Cinque Terre, small villages located on the promontory overlooking the sea which can be reached through a path. The most famous is the “Love Street” which connects Manarola to Riomaggiore.
Afterwards you can visit the Gulf of Tigullio from Sestri Levante to Portofino. In Sestri Levante you can enjoy beaches suitable for romantic moments: the Bay of Silence, surrounded by pastel-colored houses and the Bay of Fairy Tales, so called by Hans Christian Andersen. Portofino has always attracted famous couples like Humphrey Bogart and Ava Gardner and does not need any introduction!
Camogli is a village with colored high houses and characteristic little port where you can experience a romantic Valentine’s Day with many events, such as the Poetry Contest. You can read the poems on some posters displayed on the dock and in the squares, or hang a heart with your names on the pier rope nets.
To the West you can visit the romantic place of Alassio, which takes its name from the village of Alaxia as a tribute to Princess Adelasia. According to a tale, Adelasia, Emperor’s daughter, run away with a squire and founded the castle and the village which took the name from her. You must visit also the “Muretto”, a famous wall where there is a bronze statue of lovers and decorated with colored tiles with the signatures of famous people of yesterday and today.
Finally we arrive to the extreme West, the Flowers Coast, rich in villages such as Taggia, which is famous for its olive trees, Dolceacqua, Apricale and Triora. It’s also worth a visit Villa Hanbury, in the town of Ventimiglia, where you can smell the parfumes of colored, exotic and rare plants, and stand under the frescoed loggia where it seems easy to fall in love!
The Liguria region is waiting for you to celebrate your love with a romantic holiday!
