Overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, Gaeta is a famous seaside and cultural place.
Its origins are medieval, but it was already a holiday resort in the Roman times. The village lies on the spur of Monte Orlando and its coast has got very fine sand beaches, among small coves and rocks. The sea is clear and has around a rich Mediterranean flora.
The famous “Cracked Mountain” is a group of rocks that has got three clefts. A staircase of 35 steps leads to the central cleft, which according to tradition is due to the earthquake that occurred when Christ died. Unique are majolica tiles of the Via Crucis which can be seen along the walls of this rock with Metastasio’s poetry. This internal path through the rock on the crystal clear sea is a unique and exciting experience!
Gaeta is also a destination for cultural tourism: it is a small town rich in churches and monuments, a real open-sky museum!
